Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
