Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation. Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.” Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown. Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August. The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago. Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating. “Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies. Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
